The staff at Alpharetta Outfitters loves to get away from the crowds and take the road less traveled by bushwhacking through rhododendrons to find that pristine mountain stream.
The team has put together a list of their favorite gear and must-haves when exploring the blue lines of North Georgia and North Carolina.
Blue Line Rods and Reels
We all know that small streams can make for big adventures so having the right fly rod and reel can help maximize your time on the water.
Typically, shorter rods are better suited for small streams where the streamside brush can make for tight casting situations. Consider rods in the 7'0" - 8'6" range for better maneuvering in these tight quarters. These shorter rods keep the fly line closer to the angler and away from the tree branches that seem to be coming from all directions.
Other times, anglers will switch to a high sticking technique (fishing with only the fly on the water by holding the leader in the air and using only a small length of fly line). This is a great technique for fishing pocket water and getting up close and personal. For this style of fishing, a longer rod in around 9'0" works best to give you more reach. You won't likely be false casting much but compact roll casts will be easier with the added length.
Blue Line Waders & Boots
Backcountry fly fishing adventures often lead to lots of scrambling around rocks and pools making the right wading gear a key to a successful day.
Early season wading will require breathable waders that help you balance the goals of staying warm and staying dry. Felt soled wading boots is the time-tested footwear choice for good in-stream traction but rubber-soled wading boots have come a long way and are the best option for both in-stream and trail traction.
