Alpharetta Outfitters loves getting people started in the great sport of fly fishing. Our staff works hard to educate customers about the best gear and techniques to ensure you enjoy your time on the water.
We've built a beginner resources reference list to help you enjoy your time on the water.
Knot Sense
Surgeon's Knot
A surgeon's knot is used for connecting your tippet to your leader or for your dropper fly on a tandem rig.
Perfection Loop
The perfection loop's purpose is to connect your tippet to your fly line loop.
Rods, Reels and Line
You have heard talk of the weight of the rod, which does not pertain to how heavy the rod is. At the shop, we feel it best to focus on what fish you would like to pursue, not the rod weight for those starting. We have some great rod kits to get you started fly fishing for trout, bass and salt water.
Leaders and Tippet
The leader line is the final control point from your fly line to your fly. Different lengths and strengths factor in how a fly lands on the water and the ability to land your fish.
Below are some excellent leaders to start with, and you can pick up a matching tippet to replace the end of your line.
Leaders
- Trout and Brim - 9' 5x >
- Bass - 7.5 to 9' in 8-10lb >
- In shore salt - 10' 10lb+ >
Tippet
Here is a tippet chart from Orvis to help you understand tippet size to break strength in pounds.
